88 312 stinger 460 counter rotating ?
« on: August 31, 2012, 06:57:29 pm »
Hello,

I bought an 88 312 stinger and the port side engine has a spun bearing.  Is it or are they typically counter rotating?  The firing order on the intakes are the same.  Also always wondered why chevy milles have the ealignment bar on the out drives while Ford mils/cobra drives do not?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

The engines should rotate the same.  Counter rotation occurs in the outdrive.

I agree with NWC that the engines go in the same direction
You asked about engine removal. I have done many...

Remove drives and shafts from transmissions and rear transom.
You will need a long extension and 3/8 drive with socket to remove the two bolts at the rear of the engine holding down the transmission to the transom. The engine mounts(not sure what type you are using?) just unbolt from the engine if possible , but you might have to undo the bolts through the transom. If you remove it this way then take the plates off and re-bolt them to the transom and set the block back in on the rests (easier this way then trying to fish bolts of brackets in holes)
Main thing to remember is basic support is from the front mounts which are usually a manufactured bracket that fits on the factory original mount bases on the bottom of the block, and the rear mount for the transmission which are the two bolts described before.
Obvious things are removing hoses etc and exhaust hoses, but leave the exhaust manifolds on the block and use them with a soft strap for the hoist or if you have brackets on the intake manifold use a chain on that with carb removed
There are no real special tools required only I would suggest to use Snap-On "Swivel drive" extensions as they allow a 15 degree swivel off centre and makes setting the socket down on the bolts a bit more secure.
If you have any specialty add-ons such as harmonic balancer water pump or power steering etc., try to remove those before engine removal as it makes it a bet less tedious to get the block lifted out of the square sace or opening of the hatchway.
Any other questions in detail, feel free to ask.

Hey thanks for the reply !

I had already removed the heads before I posted, and not too concerned about the block as it will be returned as a core.  So basically unbolt and detach the out drive and then pull the block, but keep in mind it is supported largely from the front mounts(which I have unbolted) - is that about it ?
