Title: Finally after 3 years.... and now I have engine problems
Post by: TBone on July 07, 2015, 03:15:21 pm
I have had my 1986 stinger 222 (bracketed 225 3.0 efi mariner) for almost 3 years now with out being able to register it due to an issue with the title.  over the last few weeks, I have finally got the title squared away and it is legally, titled and registered to me.

I run the boat at the house every month just to keep her moving.  One day last year, I put it in the water to test run her.  It went well, a little break up at high RPMs (5200ish)  but the fuel is of unknown age.  But the boat ran good, 23" prop, 46mph at 5200 full tank of fuel and 3 people on board.  The fuel in the boat is at least 4 years if not older.

This year, I cant even get her onto plane, she struggles to get over 3000 rpms.  I switched over to my 21" prop, only to gain about 500 rpms.

Changed out the fuel filter, no change.  Gass looks pretty dark though.  Little darker than apple juice.

My next step will be to put my 3 gal tank onto the motor with fresh gas and see how she responds.

I figure that I will try that before I go through the exercise of draining and refilling boats 60 gallon tank that is over 3/4 full.

Maybe water in the fuel, or carb needs tuning?  On my starboard engine, when I first got it had no problem starting it.  One time I took it out, however, had a really hard time starting it.  Turned the idle screw a quarter and it seemed to start easier.  Carbs can be a little touchy.

all fuel has been drained, and has been filled with new fuel, plus some fuel system cleaners.  New fuel separator( twice)

Coils are firing just fine, going to change the plugs just to rule them out.

Still an absolute dog, struggles to get up on plane with 1 person.  takes about 30 seconds to plane barely creeps above 2500 rpm until its on plane.  then I can get about 4300.

I cut the fuel primer ball out.  Its alot better now, but a far cry from 100%   It will plane with 2 people on board, in about 20 seconds, and I can achieve 48-4900 rpms.

I am going to pull a new fuel line from the separator up to the manifold on the motor.  I will replace the small fuel fitler on the motor as well.

This is all on the same prop as last year, where I was getting 3 seconds to plane and 5300 rpms.

There is a small access hole to gain entrance to the fuel tank. There you will see the sending unit   and fuel line. There should be a small check valve there. (it's about half the size of your index finger) Take it off and clean it in strong solvent or carb cleaner.
I had the same issue with my boat and it was merely a fuel starvation problem.
Cleaning that little check valve did the trick for me!

One last thing...if the fuel is that old you should throw a couple of cans of "104 Octane Boost" into the tank then try to run the boat again.

Good luck.
